BUILD (Broader Urban Involvement & Leadership Development) is one of Chicago's leading gang intervention, violence prevention, and youth development organizations. Their mission is to engage at-risk youth in schools and on the streets to help them realize their potential and contribute to our communities. They focus on hard-to-serve youth in some of Chicago’s most challenging neighborhoods.

Since 1969, BUILD has helped thousands of young people transform their lives, and today reaches over 6500 youth and families annually with caring adult mentors and a rich variety of experiences in the arts, athletics, college & career preparation, entrepreneurship, leadership development, technology and mental health programming. Their model blends the best practices of restorative justice, conflict mediation, prevention, development, and behavioral health, and is designated an evidence-based Effective Program by the US Dept. of Justice.

About The BUILD Chicago 2020 Summer Program

The pandemic forced BUILD Chicago to reimagine everything, including how to make the 2020 Summer programs safe. Innovation, however, is one of their middle names, and they were determined to ensuring summer engagement for the young people who need it most.  With proven experience in planning and facilitating large community events, 606 Events was the ideal partner to lead the project production;  making it possible for BUILD Chicago to offer art activities, group discussions, mentor-lead workshops, and more all while staying CDC compliant. 

Marquee Event Rentals assisted the 606 Events and BUILD Chicago teams rethink their summer learning experience spaces and make face-to-face connections even better than before. With the plan to offer an in-person summer program we needed to make choices carefully and responsibly.  Safety and wellbeing was paramount in our plans – everyone needed to be safe and feel safe.  To ensure the safety of students, the community, educators and staff, everything was going to look different.
