An interview with Karen Williams

Q.How long have you been working in the event industry?
A.While working in another industry in sales and management roles for fourteen years with many of Classic’s current clientele the event industry was the next perfect step in my career. Working with hospitality, health care, industrial, education, and group purchasing organizations taught me the expectations of the industry. Attending a NACE meeting in 2013 peaked my interest in Classic and began my journey to joining the Classic team in Atlanta soon after.
Q.What type of events do you have the most experience in?
A.I’ve worked with so many interesting individuals, companies and venues from intimate weddings and anniversaries to grand openings, employee celebrations, and large scale corporate events and festivals. Events that are detailed and intense are the most rewarding to me including commencement, tailgating, homecoming and large festivals. The amount of preparation, teamwork and care from all involved beginning long before the event until the end of the event is impressive, fun and amazing!
Q.How would you describe your design style?
A.Very modern mixed with Midcentury. Clean lines with abstract touches and natural materials. I also love to use one color and throw in a central piece that mixes it up. Our clients have a great wealth of knowledge and design and have definitely taught me a new trick or two.
Q.What’s your favorite type of venue to work with?
A.An open clean space that enables me to work with a client to design a really unique event.
Q.What was your most challenging event?
A.For me a challenge must be fun, intense, detailed and require perfect timing. A dinner for over 20,000 sorority members (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority at Levy/GWCC) was challenging, although Commencement at UGA for over 5000 graduates and Taste of Atlanta requiring over 100 tents all rank at the top.
Q.What was your favorite event?
A.I have so many favorites for different reasons. Taste of Atlanta because it was challenging and it rained for an entire week while our team successfully completed the installation. It stopped raining for the event and started again as it was coming to an end. UGA Commencement was a true team effort by so many different vendors working together to make the day special for all the graduates and their families. Hill Air was awesome too because I was able to work so closely with the client to help them see their design come to life for their 60th anniversary celebration.
